Château de Boucard

Boucard Castle
Located in the commune of Noyer, it is probably the most fascinating of the Fort Country.
Nicknamed the « sleeping castle », it seems straight out of a fairy tale, so much her
architecture remained frozen in time; making us travel from the Middle Ages to the
Renaissance:
Moat side (Medieval): Its exterior appearance as a 14th Century fortress
(encircled by large water ditches and 4 massive towers), recalls that he had
a defensive goal for the region because, located in a marshy area on the edge of
the river « Great Sauldre »he protected his passage from the
invaders. Courtyard side (2 Renaissance styles):
The wing built around 1520 by Antoine de Boucard is a masterpiece. You there
Discover delicate sculptures, medallions and sled windows
typical of the « Italian Renaissance ».
The opposite wing, completed in 1569, adorned with its cherubim, is of style
« French Renaissance ».
A historical anecdote « Wars of religion » :
In the 16th century, as Boucard's family was Protestant, the castle had become a
rallying point for Huguenot leaders in the region.
The contrast with its Catholic churches shows that the Fort Country has been a land of strong religious tensions
