EGLISE D

The village origin probably dates back to Gallo-Roman times with a real settlement from the Middle Ages.

The church of Assigny, dedicated to Saint-Saturnin, is a building that has many
character and which is inseparable from the history of the village.
It has very old foundations, dating back to the 12th century. However, it has been profoundly transformed over the centuries, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, periods of prosperity for the region.

The bell tower : It is a rather large square tower, which once served as a
refuge in the event of disturbances (very common in this area of passage between
Berry and Sologne). This massive square tower is home to a ringtone
for centuries.
Beyond the call to prayer, they served as « Tocsin » to alert
residents in the event of a fire in farms (common due to roofs of
or to announce hailstorms, winemakers believing
once that the sound of the bells could « Break » clouds.

Sound offal (wood blades inclined in the openings of the bell tower). They
are essential to direct the sound of the bells towards the village floor rather than
to the sky, thus allowing the voice of the church to carry to the most remote hamlets of the Fairy of the Marnes.

• The porch: has a rustic charm typical of rural churches
Berrichonnes.
One of the most significant facts about this church is its position. The
village of Assigny is located on a « croup » Mares.
The church is almost at the top of this hill (the « Dot des Marnes »),
which explains why its bell tower is visible from very far in the countryside
surrounding.
The interior remained quite simple, but it creates an atmosphere of serenity. You can admire:
• The high altar and its altarpiece.
• Ancient baptismal fonts.

The stained glass: The majority of the current stained glass is from the second half of the
19th century (around 1870-1880).
The performances : You will of course find Saint Saturnin, the patron of
the parish (first bishop of Toulouse, often represented with a bull
instrument of his martyrdom).
