EGLISE ST MARTIN – SURY ES BOIS –

SURY-ES-BOIS FRANÇAIS
Sury comes from the lower Latin Suriacus formed by Surius and the suffix –acus. It was at the time that was both that of the Roman occupation and that of the evangelization of the Gaulle that we owe, according to tradition, the name of Sury-es-Bois.
The church of Sury-es-Bois, is dedicated to Saint Martin.
It is a building that has traversed centuries with several significant reconstruction phases.
Old origins: The existence of a church is attested from 1034 in a charter of the Archbishop of Bourges, then confirmed in 1134 by a bubble of Pope Adrien IV.
Evolution: The oldest part preserved is the choirRomanesque style.
The nave, without transept, dates mainly from the 15th century.
Lateral chapels were added over time, the last to the north dating from 1856-1857.
The bell tower: He has a turbulent history. The original bell tower was destroyed during the Revolution (1793), then rebuilt between 1821 and 1822.
Style: A mixture of novel (XIe) and Gothic (15th), with a classic western portal.
Remarkable elements:
The choir with cut strips (older than the nave).
The murals represent the Last Supper, the entrance to Jerusalem, the Resurrection and the downfall to the limbs, a legend of St George,
(paintings dated late 15th century).
Since 2019 several stained glass windows have been created: Tryptique de St Pardoux, Ste Solange, St Eloi;
stained glass windows of St Urbain, St Anne and soon St Joseph.
The Stalls and the baptismal fonts.
