« INUTILE RUE » – Vailly on Sauldre

INUTILE RUE
Why is that name « Street Needless » ?
Contrary to what one might think, it's not because it was useless!
To establish a passage between Boulevard de la République and Chemin de Grande Communication number 8, a family transferred a 10 m wide strip of land to the commune for free in 1904.
But the Departmental Commission which will meet in May 1905 will not give a favourable opinion to the request for a grant for this access which was to be named Decensière Chaudry.
In September the construction will be completed but will generate dissatisfaction from the population that it will have cost far too much for « No use » ...where her name is Street Needless
A vestige of the medieval route
Rue Noir is the witness of the ancient organization of the town of Vailly:
it shows that the village has not been built straight (like a modern city), but by stacking houses along the river and around the Lordship.
Today, the Street Needless has become... very useful for tourism! It is one of the favourite crossing points for those who make the heritage circuit in Vailly.
