Vailly and his cantonal past
Dr. Christian Romain wishes to provide, through these few lines, some clarifications on the formation of the canton of Vailly on Sauldre in the face of certain ideas rectified and often erroneous.
In 1790, he announced, "the abolition of the provinces whose Berry ones led not without some marginal difficulties, the correction of the departments of Upper and Lower Berry which quickly dominated Cher and Indre. The Cher department is divided into 88 cantons and 7 discrits. At the end of 1790 January 1791, the reduction to 42 cantons was decided." From 1790 the canton of Vailly was formed with the communes of Barlieu, Conressault, Dampierre en Crot, Thou, Vailly and Villegenon, de facto attached to the district of Aubigny. Jars became the chief place of canton called Jars-Nancray, with the communes of Assigny, Boucard, Crésancy, Neuilly en Sancerre, Neuvy deux Clochers, Reigny Jars and Nancray, a canton attached to the district of Sancerre. On 22 October 1793 the commune of Boucard was attached to the town of Jars. On November 11, 1794 the cantonal centre of Jars was transferred to Sens Beaujeu. On 13 May 1896, in the Pays-Fort Sancerrois, the cantons of Sancerre, Sury en Vaux, Sans Beaujeu, Veaugues and Vailly;
As soon as the thermal reaction (1894/1795) the inhabitants of Boucard asked to rebuild a commune. In 1801 (fructidor an 9) the cantons were established on the current basis. μ
It will take 1848 (Royal Order of 8 March) for the commune of Boucard to take the name of Le Noyer. Subligny was attached to the canton of Sury en Vaux. In 1793 this canton included Bannay, Bué, Menetou Ratel, Sainte Gemme, Subligny, Sury en Vaux. During the revolutionary period, in addition to the episode of the little Sanceroise Vendée, Boucard's inhabitants complained about the harshness of Jars' neighbours.
The exact date of the arrival of the Vailly gendarmerie was not found (during the revolutionary unrest, the troops came from Sancerre). It can be said that Jean Baptiste Barthe, Grand-poo of Alain Fournier, was a gendarme in 1864. On April 24, the mother of the writer was born in Vailly, Marie Albania Barthe.
Many have experienced the old gestramerie located at the corner of the Chevaise road and the boulevard de la République, a vast building without great comfort demolished in the 1970s to face the one we currently copnna.
Two older locations served as gendarmerie. The first would have been located in the current property of Michel Desriaux (Grande Rue-route de Sancerre), the second road of Sury-ès-Bois.
Although fragmented the building still runs with the well and stables at 3 – 5 – 7 of said street. Its construction still exists today and the memory of our guardians of local history contains tresiors and anecdotes that our readers will discover as we publish.
