Saint Teresa of Avila « Large » Therese)
She lived in 16th century Spain. She is a woman of deaction, a reformer with a well tempered character and an immense mystic.
Born in 1515, she entered Carmel but found the religious life of her time too Released. It therefore decides to reform the order and founded the decal Carmelites, characterized by a life of poverty, loneliness and intense prayer. She traveled Spain on horseback to found more than 17 convents.
His spiritual style: Very anchored in the mystical experience (she went through ecstasy It is not the case that there is a great deal to be done.
His major work: The Inner Castle, a guide where she compares the human soul to a strong castle composed of seven houses to cross to unite with God.
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (The « Small » Therese)
She lived in France at the end of the 19th century. It is famous for its simplicity and spiritual freshness.
Born Thérèse Martin in 1873, she entered the Carmel of Lisieux at only 15 years old (with a derogation from the Pope!) and died there very young, at 24, from tuberculosis. She lived a hidden life, almost banal in appearance, in her Norman convent.
His spiritual style: The « Small ». Therese thought that there was no need to perform heroic actions or extreme penances to attain holiness. Just do the little things of everyday life (smile to an annoying sister, pick up a pin) with immense love.
His major work: History of a soul, a collection of his autobiographical manuscripts written by order of his superior. Published after his death, this book became a world best seller.
